Compass Guide
Phone Compass Not Working? Things to Check
A phone compass can fail because of permissions, browser limits, calibration, or magnetic interference. Check these points one by one before assuming the app is broken.
1. Check sensor support
Some browsers and devices restrict access to orientation sensors. If the web compass does not update, try the app or another browser.
2. Allow sensor permission
Some environments, especially iOS Safari, ask for motion or orientation permission. Tap start and allow the request so the page can receive heading values.
3. Remove magnetic interference
Magnetic cases, car mounts, wireless chargers, speakers, and metal desks can make the heading very wrong. Move to a different spot and test again.
4. Try the installed app if the browser fails
Browser sensor access can be inconsistent. On the same device, an installed app may receive direction data more reliably than a web page.
FAQ
What should I do if the compass points the wrong way?
Move away from magnets or metal, then calibrate with a figure-eight motion. If it still fails, check browser and device sensor limits.
Why does a web compass show no sensor value?
The browser may block orientation sensors or permission may be denied. Allow permission or try the installed app.
